Nine people, one long table, about forty coats a week

  1. Every coat is laid out on an eight-metre table in our old teahouse and cut by hand, one layer at a time. Offcuts go into the hats.

  2. Kihada bark simmers in small batches, rain or not. No two linings come out the same yellow, which is why every coat has a number.

  3. Eleven stitches to the inch, then a 13 mm clear tape pressed over every seam with hot air and two rollers. A Machi Coat carries 4.2 metres of it.
